Tip 1) DRINK A GLASS OF WATER AFTER EACH SNACK

This will help you get in your 8 to 10 glasses of water each
day but it can also have other benefits. Ever feel hungry after
eating a handful or standard serving of nuts? Try drinking water
afterwards. The water will help you feel full and prevent
overindulgence.

Drinking water after a snack will also help remove the aftertaste from your mouth and can help curb your desire for more.

Tip 2) EAT SLOWLY & ENJOY YOUR FOOD

You will feel full and more satisfied if you take the time to savor your food and chew it slower. Don’t get in the habit of eating while standing or eating quickly. Sit down and chew.

Eating slower will help you enjoy your food more, pay attention
to what it is you are actually eating and get a better sense of when you are actually full.

Tip 3) EAT YOUR LARGER MEALS EARLY, AND SMALLER MEALS LATER

You will feel better and lose weight quicker if you eat a large
breakfast and eat a smaller dinner. You may also want to eat
the majority of your carbs earlier in the day, saving a salad and lean meat protein for dinner.

Eating larger meals during the part of the day when you are most active will help you to feel satisfied throughout the day and curb cravings for unhealthy snacks.

It seems everyone is looking for that magic bullet – rapid weight loss secret that will instantly shed excess weight and turn you into a supermodel.

The fact is, there are healthy, effective and simple techniques you can use to achieve weight loss – and keep it off over the long term.

Tip 1: Rapid weight loss requires a multi-faceted approach that combines diet, excercise, emotional support and in some cases, diet supplements.

Start by learning about and mapping out a low-carb diet you can live with. You can use the resources below to get more information on finding a low-carb diet you can live with. Develop an exercise program that results in at least 15 minutes of activity each day – walking, running, swimming are all good.

Tip 2: Set realistic goals. Rapid weight loss depends on your ability to focus on a disciplined mix of diet and exercise. By setting realistic goals, you will not become discouraged and lose your focus.

Tip 3: Listen to your body. Though there are many rapid weight loss plans out there, everyone’s body and metabolism reacts differently to these programs. Some people can’t progress on the diet as fast as others. So, substitute a more rigorous exercise program to compensate. Others are not able to exercise as rigorously – learn to listen to your body and adjust your diet plan accordingly.

Tip 4: Drink lots of water. Drink at least 6 – 8oz glasses of water each day. Weight loss depends on flusing your system out, and you must stay hydrated during that process.

Above all else, be consistent. Moderate dieting, exercise and supplementation applied in a consistent way, day after day will result in better weight loss than massive action followed by a return to old habits.

As you can see, a moderate diet plan and moderate exercise program combined with solid emotional support is the key to succeeding with rapid weight loss.

I personal lost 60 pounds in 2003. Here are some tactics I used to lose the weight.

Eat every three hours. This will keep your blood sugar stable. Try to eat real food at least three times a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. In between your food meals take a good meal replacement shake or bar.

Never eat a carbohydrate by itself. This is basically all sugar. When you eat a carbohydrate by itself there is a sudden increase in sugar in the body. This causes the body to release insulin. However, the body releases too much insulin because it thinks more sugar is coming. The insulin basically grabs the sugar/carbohydrate and stores it to fat for use at some other time. Since your body released too much insulin there is not enough sugar to support the brain function. That is why you feel tired or sluggish. So you’re fatter and dumber.

Watch the gums and mints. Many of these little gums and mints contain calories, sugars, and everything else that is not good for you. Read the labels, if it has sugar in it do not eat it.

Eat foods that have 30% or less, calories from fat. Everyone is on this big no carbohydrate craze. However, did you know that 1 gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories, 1 gram of protein contains 4 calories, and 1 gram of fat contains 9 calories? There are over twice as many calories in a single gram of fat, than in a protein or carbohydrate.

To find out how many calories are from fat check the label. The label will list the total calories and then list how many calories are from fat. If there are 100 total calories, and there are 70 calories from fat, that’s 70%, too high.

Give yourself one reward day to eat and drink whatever you want. You worked hard all week, reward yourself.

Alcohol is a converted to a sugar. Save it for your free day. If you do drink, it might also be helpful to take hydroxycitric acid capsules about 30 minutes before drinking. Hydroycitric acid is from the herb Garcinia Cambogia. This interferes with the enzyme that converts excess sugars into triglycerides, lessening the likelihood the alcohol will be stored as fat.

Ahh… These are the days of festivities, joy, pleasure and plenty of eating and drinking. Nothing like the holidays! BUT it comes at a price. If you’re not careful about your nutritional intake you might end up with extra unneeded weight.

This article will list important do able holiday weight loss tips and supplements that help with weight loss.

1. Take Charge

The first step to weight loss is setting a realistic goal. By using a BMI chart and consulting with your health-care provider, you can determine what a healthy weight is for you. If you plan to lose more than 15 to 20 pounds, have any health problems, or take medication on a regular basis, a doctor should evaluate you before you begin a weight loss program.

2. Are you overweight?

Overweight refers to an excess of body weight, but not necessarily body fat. Obesity means an excessively high proportion of body fat. Health professionals use a measurement called body mass index (BMI) to classify an adult’s weight as healthy, overweight, or obese. BMI describes body weight relative to height and is correlated with total body fat content in most adults.

To get your approximate BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703, then divide the result by your height in inches, and divide that result by your height in inches a second time. (Or you can use the interactive BMI calculator at www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bmicalc.htm.)

A BMI from 18.5 up to 25 is considered in the healthy range, from 25 up to 30 is overweight and 30 or higher is obese. Generally, the higher a person’s BMI, the greater the risk for health problems, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). However, there are some exceptions. For example, very muscular people, like body builders, may have a BMI greater than 25 or even 30, but this reflects increased muscle rather than fat. In addition to a high BMI, having excess abdominal body fat is a health risk. Men with a waist of more than 40 inches around and women with a waist of 35 inches or more are at risk for health problems.

3. Change eating habits

Dieting may conjure up visions of eating lettuce and sprouts–but you can enjoy all foods as part of a healthy diet as long as you don’t overdo it on fat (especially saturated fat), protein, sugars, and alcohol. To be successful at losing weight, you need to change your lifestyle–not just go on a diet, experts say.

Limit portion sizes, especially of foods high in calories, such as cookies, cakes and other sweets; french fries; and fats, oils and spreads. Reducing dietary fat alone–without reducing calories–will not produce weight loss, according to the NHLBI’s guidelines on treating overweight and obesity in adults. Eat less and move more. Your body needs to burn more calories than you take in.

4. Increase physical activity

Most health experts recommend a combination of a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for weight loss. Most adults should get at least 30 minutes and children should get 60 minutes of moderate physical activity on most, and preferably all, days of the week. Exercise does not have to be strenuous to be beneficial and some studies show that short sessions of exercise several times a day are just as effective at burning calories and improving health as one long session.

5. De-stress yourself

The holiday season can be stressful and in some individuals this may lead to overeating due to stress further leading to increase in weight. If you identify yourself as one these people and feel the need to eat in between meals then at least eat healthy instead of munching on chips and cookies etc try veggies and fruits.

6. Don’t skip meals

Otherwise it will encourage you to over eat at the next meal. If you have to snack in between meals try snacking on fruits and veggies.

7. Food Allergies

Make note of foods you are allergic to. Food allergies disrupt metabolism and thus hinder weight loss.

8. Crash Diets

Avoid them. They are mostly self-defeating and serve only as a temporary band-Aid solution.

9. Drink plenty of water

To flush out the toxins from your body.

10. Tips for Eating Out

Choose foods that are steamed, broiled, baked, roasted, poached or stir-fried.

Share food, such as a main dish or dessert, with your dining partner.

Take part of the food home with you, and refrigerate immediately. You may want to ask for a take-home container when the meal arrives. Spoon half the meal into it, so you’re more likely to eat only what’s left on your plate.

Request your meal to be served without gravy, sauces, butter or margarine.

Ask for salad dressing on the side, and use only small amounts of full-fat dressings.

No Laughing matter

We’re putting on the pounds at an alarmingly rapid rate. And we’re sacrificing our health for the sake of super size portions, biggie drinks, and two-for-one value meals, obesity researchers say.

More than 60 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While the number of overweight people has been slowly climbing since the 1980s, the number of obese adults has nearly doubled since then.

Besides the above weight loss tips certain supplements may also help in weight loss. Some of these supplements are listed below.

1. GREEN TEA (Popular for weight loss, also a powerful antioxidant)

2. Garcinia Combogia

3. Chromium Picolinate

4. Flaxseed Oil

5. Lecithin

6. L-Carnitine

7. Fennel

8. Fenugreek

Is quick weight loss a good idea? It all depends what you consider quick. Some people follow what used to be called ‘crash’ diets, eating next to nothing for a limited period of time in an attempt to lose weight as quickly as possible. This is seldom a good idea, for several reasons. First, super quick weight loss necessitates following such a restrictive diet that the dieter is more than likely to feel deprived – indeed, he or she has an excellent reason for feeling this way! A diet very low in calories is unlikely to provide adequate nutrition, so it leaves you feeling hungry, deprived and resentful. People have different reactions to this; some rebel, while others are convinced that they don’t deserve to eat normally and that they’ll never be able to, without gainin weight. In other words, crash diets set the stage for future eating disorders.

Also, very quick weight loss seldom stays off. That’s because most people’s bodies tend to have two metabolism ’settings’, probably left over from those of early humans. When food is plentiful, it is consumed as needed, and the excess is stored in the form of fat. But when food is scarce (like during a restrictive diet) your body is convinced that it’s going through a ‘famine’ time, and metolism slows down to conserve energy. If you’re after quick weight loss, that’s the last thing that you want, of course. And after you start to eat normally again, your body might still think that it’s in a famine and needs to hold on to every bit of energy it can. In fact, some chronic dieters succeed in permanently slowing down their metabolism to the point where they end up gaining more weight than they ever lost in the first place. That’s because lost muscle weight can sometimes be replaced by an equal volume of fat.

The real key to quick weight loss, therefore, is not cutting calories but increasing activity so that you burn more of them more quickly. Consider the fact that ballet dancers can lose up to five pounds in a single performance – now that’s quick weight loss! Of course, most of us will never be active enough to lose weight that quickly, but certainly a daily workout, long or short, can help get you on the road to quick weight loss. An exercise program coupled with watching what you eat is absolutely optimal in allowing you to lose weight fast. Don’t be tempted by gimmicks or pills, though; at best, they are likely to be waste of money, and at worst, they can be downright dangerous.

—————————————————————————————–

If you’re serious about losing weight, there are 3 things, when combined, can make your battle much, much easier. The first is Hoodia Gordoni. Hoodia reduces your appetite in minutes, causing you to eat less. The second is Weight Loss Patch Pro that boosts your metabolism so that you burn the maximum amount of fat each day. The third important ingredient is Dietrine carb blocker, which blocks most of the fat and carbohydrates in the food you eat from going into your body.

Simple inexpensive and long term weight loss is possible through good nutrition, weight loss dietary supplements such as minerals, vitamins, amino acids and essential fatty acids along with lifestyle changes and a healthy attitude to eating. In this article we’ll get you started on your weight loss program and get you healthy at the same time.

Obesity is now a major problem in the U.S., and most western countries. A staggering 50% of children and more than 35% of adults are obese and that means they are in a high risk category for the major diseases such as adult onset diabetes, coronary heart disease and cancer – excellent reasons to lose weight.

Weight loss dietary supplements can help in the weight loss process but more importantly they work to keep your body healthy and reduce the risk of health problems.

To Lose Weight – Don’t Diet!

Over 90% of diets fail – even the good ones. Diets don’t work for a number of reasons:

They restrict fat intake and leave you feeling hungry – fat has a number of important functions in the body and you are left feeling ‘full’ after eating it. Carbohydrates and low calories on the other hand leave you feeling hungry again after an hour.

When you restrict calories you also restrict nutrition. If you lack essential nutrients you are more likely to satisfy your needs by going on eating binges, ‘the munchies’. A long term approach focuses on weight loss dietary supplements to meet your nutritional requirements and stop those ’snack attacks’.

They are restrictive to your lifestyle.

Weight Loss That Works

Any weight loss program needs to be a long-term lifestyle commitment, supported by nutritional weight loss dietary supplements and an eating plan that will not restrict or compromise your lifestyle too much. Here are the main features:

Eat larger meals at the beginning of the day and smaller meals in the evening

Consume plenty of protein, green leafy vegetables and complex carbohydrates such as vegetables and whole grains

Have high protein snacks between meals – such as chicken and cottage cheese etc. A protein shake with whey or soy is ideal when mixed with your favourite fruit

Two servings of fresh fruit are ideal as desserts

Drink plenty of fresh filtered water. Drinking more water will reduce the cravings and allow your liver to function more efficiently; this helps because one of the jobs of the liver is to convert fat into energy

At the same time you need to avoid:

Caffeine – increases your loss of essential minerals and depletes your blood sugar; when this happens you get the munchies and consume the ‘wrong food’.

Refined carbohydrates and sugar – (the ‘wrong food’) will be turned into fat very quickly; examples are white bread, white rice, pasta, sugar and sugary foods

Soft drinks (and carbonated drinks) – high in sugar and raise your risk of osteoporosis, diabetes and a number of other diseases

Fried food and margarine – the ‘bad fats’ which will increase your risk of a number of diseases

Weight Loss Dietary Supplements

Start supplementing with weight loss dietary supplements including minerals, vitamins, amino acids and essential fatty acids. This will keep you in excellent health, reduce the cravings for sweet or unhealthy snack foods while making sure you have the best nutrition available.

Other weight loss dietary supplements include a high quality Whey Protein Powder – choose a good brand that contains plenty of vitamins, minerals and is low in sugar and carbohydrate.

Supplements containing chromium can assist with the regulation of blood sugar and will assist with weight loss by improving the conversion of sugar into energy as opposed to fat.

Exercise, Attitude and Throw Away the Scales

Exercise and a healthy attitude are very important for your long term well being and weight control.

Any exercise is beneficial; the main thing is to make it enjoyable. Start out slowly and gradually develop a plan i.e. a training program. It may involve a walk on Monday; swim on Wednesday, golf on Friday and your favorite team sport on Saturday. Regular exercise lowers your risk of diseases, keeps you healthy and focused. The weight loss dietary supplements will help here by giving you more energy and excellent nutrition.

At the same time develop a health attitude – meaning that you should be aware of your program – particularly in the early days – write out your weight loss goals and visualize how you will look. An organized plan as well as persistence will work.

To measure your results, throw away the scales and use a tape measure around your neck, upper arms, chest, waist, hips, thighs and calves – once a week is fine.

Saboteurs are people and thoughts that are going to sabotage you when you are at all weak in your bid to better yourself. I can identify many internal and external forces that will try to stop me from what I want on an almost daily basis. Lets start with the outside forces first and then we can start blaming ourselves after that.

External saboteurs are family, friends and coworkers and can always be identified by their compassion for what you are doing. Lets see if you can pick out any of these terms: “Well it’s not like I make cookies every day” or “You have sure been working hard at it, why not take a day off and go shopping?” or “You must be really proud of yourself for the changes, do you even miss chocolate at all?”. These are all examples of the way that people try to be nice but feel like maybe you are sacrificing too much. If you look back now on how your life was a few months ago it probably seemed a lot less exciting, you had a rhythm and schedule you were happy with and that rut was comfortable for you, think about how others around you feel. Almost all people have a rut that they get in that makes their life comfortable and when they see someone either really excel or make a lot of changes at once it makes them uncomfortable it makes them feel that their lives are inadequate and it makes them want to make sure that they are not being left behind. Other people can not be blamed completely for their feelings as you always have an out with them saying that you just felt like making changes and are happy with the way things are going and oh yes of course I miss the chocolate.

Internal Saboteurs are much more dangerous. Just as others do not want to see things around them change quickly your mind reels from this as well. Every time you give up a bad food your body and mind will ask you why things were some bad and why are you sacrificing again. Every time you try a different kind of workout your body and mind will complain that things were going well before and that you are wasting voluble energy and are still to sore from before to make this change. I always am happy when I make a change in my life as I have fluctuated in the past from being in great control of my level of fitness, my diet and my exercise and have let them slip away easily again this is some times a part of life, when you are not looking your body decides to take a vacation.

There are some really great ways to make sure that your life continues in the right direction and that is with proper goals and with reasons behind these goals. I want to cover this in depth tomorrow so today just look around and see what maybe looming on the horizons for things that are painful to you that may be trying to break the spirit of your change and try to write these things down. I have written down ideas in the past and then when I went back to them months later am shocked to see what I had thought of before. Sometimes I kick myself for not implementing those great ideas I had in the past and forgot about but you can probably see from that statement what one of my problems has always been.

Why was the FDA trying to hide the facts about Ephedra from YOU?

In April 2004 the FDA removed ephedra from the market claiming that it was responsible for dozens of deaths. The legal battle between the FDA and health officials began when the health officials became unhappy with the FDA’s decision to ban ephedra. The FDA had not taken proper action in declaring the ban on Ephedra based products. There reasoning for the ban was that there were too many problems occurring, some of which led to deaths. Ephedra was considered to be a drug that was too risky. The FDA claims that the negatives outweighed the positive aspects of the drug.

Although this didn’t seem to be the case until a baseball player had died sometime after taking an Ephedra based product to increase his performance. The FDA didn’t recognize that the baseball player had miss used the herb. Just like the others who had serious problems with the use of Ephedra; they were the same ones who abused the drug thinking they could increase the benefits by taking more at one time

On April 14 of 2005 a federal judge, Tena Campbell of the federal district court in Salt Lake City Utah reversed the ban on ephedra. This reversal forced the FDA revise their decision to ban products containing Ephedra.. The FDA lifted the ban recently because they where forced to realize Ephedra based products, if used properly, had astounding benefits, especially weight loss by naturally increasing energy and metabolism.

Ephedrine is found in many over-the-counter medications such as Sudafed, Contac, Primatene, and Bronkaid, but it has been used for over 5,000 years. It was used by the Chinese for many health issues including asthma and bronchitis. Ephedra is a powerful blood purifier, being a popular folk remedy for such conditions as arthritis, rheumatism, bursitis and other painful muscle and joint problems. Since Ephedra is a vasoconstrictor, it has also been used to stop internal bleeding.

There is only one company that is able to legally sell Ephedra based products. The rights to market an Ephedra based product that aids in weight loss where bought by the makers of Betafuel. The main goal of Betafuel is to help its users to lose weight quickly and easily. If you are interested in this product, and would like to find out more information concerning Betafuel, it can be found here at http://www.ephedracenter.com.

Whether it be asthma, obesity, or any other form of handicap, all safe option to over come the hurdle should be made available. It is my goal to help inform those who may not realize these options exist. Information is the key to over coming all obstacles in life.

The weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and everybody is trying to jump into the bandwagon and trying to convince you that they know what it takes to make you lose weight. Unfortunately, this information overload has given birth to a ton of misinformation. As such, it is best if you start your weight loss plan by distinguishing fact from fiction.

Weight Loss Facts and Fallacies

Skipping breakfast will make you lose weight (because you consume less food for the day). Actually, skipping breakfast achieves the opposite – you gain weight! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s basically what keeps you going for the rest of the day and a missed morning meal would make you feel hungry earlier than usual and then what? Either you’ll eat more than you should because you are extremely hungry or eat something that’s not healthy because it’s the most convenient thing your hands can grab at the moment.

Nibbles don’t count. A lot of weight challenged people tend to rationalize nibbling here and there would not make them gain weight. Unfortunately, it does. Just like how a couple of dimes can make a dollar, a bucketful of nibbles will be equivalent to one full meal.

Parties are exceptions. It does not matter if it’s a simple dinner at a small Chinese restaurant, a charity ball in a five-star hotel or a wedding reception – you are STILL not excused from counting calories and paying strict attention to the do’s and don’ts of your diet regime. Here’s food for thought – no matter where you eat, chocolate will always be high on sugar.

The only way to lose weight is to commit to a fitness club. If there’s a will, there’s a way! Exercise, literally, is movement. As such, going up and down the stairs, walking to and from work or simply cleaning your house or doing a little gardening all counts!

Popular diets don’t work. It is not that popular diets do not work it is just that they do not work for everyone. Our bodies are different from each other and react differently to different stimuli. For instance, the Atkins diet has helped thousands of people lose weight but has caused weight gain in others. So what do you do? The best and safest way to diet is to consult a nutritionist or dietician who can recommend the diet that is most suited for your body and current fitness goals.

Weight Loss = A Commitment to A New Way of Life

In your quest for weight loss, you will come across hundreds more of myths such as those listed above. However, in the middle of all of these there is one single truth that all diets and weight loss regimens concede to be true – to achieve weight loss and maintain it, you need to change your lifestyle.

To lose those unwanted pounds, you simply need to burn off more energy than you acquire from the foods you eat. Period. So seriously, the secret to weight loss is really something you have known all this time right? You need to change the way you look at food, make a conscious decision to start eating healthy and start exercising daily.

Brad Howard is one funny guy. If you are tired of wasting away and you’re a little concerned that the pounds aren’t coming off like they should be, maybe it’s time to try something a little different.

Cellulite – Reduce The Appearance

———————————

Sallie Elizabeth has always had large breasts and a big
bottom, and she has accepted them as part of her genetic
makeup. But when cellulite appeared in the back of her upper
leg, she “freaked out” and resolved to do something about
it.

A friend recommended endermologie, a deep massage treatment
using a motorized device with two adjustable rollers and
controlled suction. The device is said to improve the look
of cellulite by gently folding and unfolding the skin for
smooth and regulated deep-tissue movement.

The cellulite is “less visible,” she says, noting her
smoother, softer skin. “I feel healthier. My circulation has
improved … and I feel more relaxed.”

To keep up the effects, the 20-something model visits Smooth
Synergy, a cosmedical spa in Manhattan, once or twice a week
for 35-minute sessions with the endermologie machine and a
technician.

Elizabeth may be enjoying her cellulite-busting experience,
but experts raise eyebrows at many tools or treatments
purported to reduce the appearance of cellulite, trim fat in
specific areas, shed pounds, or build muscle, particularly
if they claim to replace exercise and good nutrition.

“They’re a waste of money,” says Richard Cotton, a spokesman
for the American Council on Exercise and chief exercise
physiologist for myexerciseplan.com.

If that is the case, then a sizeable chunk of currency could
be going down the drain. According to a Federal Trade
Commission (FTC) weight loss advertising trend report, in
the year 2000 alone, consumers spent an estimated $34.7
billion on weight-loss products and programs.

While it is not known how much of that accounts for sales of
unproven or fraudulent merchandise, an FTC study of weight
loss ads from different media shows that nearly 40% of ads
make at least one false claim, and an additional 15% make at
least one claim that is very likely false, or lacks proof.

To add to the number soup: Results from a national health
survey conducted between 1999 and 2000 indicate that more
than six out of every 10 Americans are overweight or obese,
a figure that has increased dramatically in recent years.

Another recent survey that looked at the attitudes of
Americans adults toward their own weight found that despite
the fact that two-thirds of men were considered overweight,
only about half (51%) said they wanted to lose weight versus
68% of women who said they wanted to lose weight.

Put it all together and there are arguably more people
wanting to use weight loss products, and according to the
government’s trend report, the “marketplace has responded
with a proliferating array of products and services, many
promising miraculous, quick-fix remedies.”

There are, indeed, numerous therapies, including weight loss
programs and dietary supplements. Then there are the popular
treadmills, bun and ab rollers, the body bow, and bun and
thigh max.

For this piece, however, WebMD looked only into passive
exercise devices such as electrical muscle stimulators and
toning tables, cellulite reduction therapies, and gels,
creams, eyeglasses, earrings and similar doodads marketed
for weight loss, and muscle-building.

Granted, not all remedies may be the same, but health
professionals say far too many of them can’t be trusted.

Passive Weight Loss

——————-
To Elizabeth’s credit, she tries to eat right, jog, do
Pilates, and perform squats to supplement her endermologie
sessions. In fact, good nutrition and regular physical
activity are recommended with the treatment.

However, many weight loss, cellulite-busting, and
muscle-building products promise results without having to
do too much.

“It’s the idea that an individual can get to the body size
they want without any increase in physical activity or
without any change in eating,” says Jennifer Anderson, PhD,
RD, professor and extension specialist at Colorado State
University’s department of food science and human nutrition.

She simply laughs at appetite-suppressing eyeglasses, weight
loss patches and chewing gum, toning gels, fat-melting
creams, and evening solutions that claim to trim waistlines
during sleep.

“In some instances, it’s a total gimmick,” says Anderson.
“In other instances, it will reduce a lot of water weight
quickly, but it’s never going to change eating behaviors,
activity levels, and make that the key to their lifestyle.”

This quick water weight loss never leads to real, long-term
weight loss, says Anderson, noting that the only weight loss
and toning plan that works involves eating well and moving
your body.

Furthermore, she says there is no proof that cellulite can
be massaged away or taken out by injections of vitamins,
special underwear, or use of other gizmos. To get rid of the
dimpled fat, weight must be shed, and skin made firmer by
doing strength training.

Francie M. Berg, a licensed nutritionist, and founder of the
Healthy Weight Network, agrees. “If you want to tone your
body or become more fit, you need to do the work. It’s not
lying on a table, and having [a gadget] lift your feet,” she
says referring to no-effort toning tables, beds, and
machines.

The value of toning and weight loss equipment depends on how
much work you can get a person to do to burn energy, says
Berg, pointing out that when people see desired results with
normally passive devices and treatments, it’s usually
because they’ve also made efforts to eat well or exercise.

Truth With A Twist

—————-
Berg coordinates the Task Force on Weight Loss Abuse for the
National Council Against Health Fraud, which gives out
annual Slim Chance Awards to selected weight loss products.

This year’s “worst gimmick” prize went out to MagnaSlim,
which claims to relieve stress and its byproduct of
overeating by placing magnets and a magnetized solution at
specific acupuncture points. The magnet at the acupressure
point would supposedly improve cell function, restore Chi
(life force energy), and give a person more control over
what they put in their mouths.

Weight loss promoters have long cashed in on the concept of
acupressure and magnetic therapy for weight loss, even
though there is no proof it works, says Berg. Items using
similar concepts on the market include magnetic weight-loss
earrings, adhesives, beads, and seeds.

It is apparently not uncommon for manufacturers to piggyback
on ideas and studies that may have genuine validity, and
twist them for commercial purposes.

Another example would be the electrical muscle stimulators
(EMS) promoted to do anything from slough off weight to tone
muscle to form six-pack abs. Some ads claim this is possible
without exercise.

Health experts scoff at such an idea, but do say EMS is a
valuable tool for physical therapy. “There are times when
that really helps,” says Anderson, pointing to
rehabilitation programs for people with physical injuries or
stroke-related debilitation.

“The problem I have with it is if it’s being marketed as
muscle stimulation, and that will help you tone up and lose
weight,” says Anderson. “Well, it probably will help you
tone a little bit, but it shouldn’t take place of being more
active and looking at how many calories we put in our mouth
each day.”

Gad Alon, PhD, associate professor in the department of
physical therapy and rehabilitation science at the
University of Maryland in Baltimore, has studied the effects
of EMS, and many promoters often refer to his research in
peddling their wares.

He says many of these marketers misuse his work, saying
things like, “Seven physicians at the University of Maryland
have concluded that you may never have to do sit-ups again.”

First of all, says Alon, there were no physicians present
for the studies; he and his students conducted the studies,
and they never addressed the topic of weight loss.

Alon warns, though, that some EMS devices in the market
might not have the proper specifications to work properly.
He says they may use electrodes that do not have good
conductivity, or some may be too small to cover large muscle

The Damage and what to do with it
Some of the weight loss gadgets may seem too good to be
true, yet even smart people fall for them. Why are people so
willing to believe these quick and easy schemes?

“Hope springs eternal,” says Edward Abramson, PhD, a
clinical psychologist, and author of Emotional Eating: What
You Need to Know Before Starting Another Diet. He says
people are always looking for a shortcut, especially for
difficult, ongoing problems.

Besides losing money on bunk products, however, consumers
could get their hopes dashed. Abramson says repeated
disappointments with weight loss could undermine a person’s
overall sense of well-being. He says some people could even
internalize blame to a point that could lead to eating
disorders.

Berg adds that false weight loss systems and goods could
also prevent people from seeking real treatment, interfere
with responsible programs that do work, and promote distrust
of the medical community.

To avoid falling prey to such schemes, the FDA says
consumers should be particularly skeptical of claims
containing words like easy, effortless, guaranteed,
miraculous, magical, breakthrough, new discovery,
mysterious, exotic, secret, exclusive, and ancient.

The experts interviewed by WebMD also recommend
concentrating on weight-management strategies that are
proven to work, such as incorporating a balanced diet with
reduced calories with a regular exercise regimen. Some tips
include:

Eat more fruits and vegetables. Foods high in fiber such as
whole grain breads, fruit, and cereal can help you feel full
longer.

Exercise. Get 30 minutes of physical activity a day even if
you must split it in 10-minute increments throughout the
day. Try to exercise on most days of the week; choose an
activity you enjoy. Start slowly and then add more days as
tolerated.

Be accepting. Accept your body the way it is.
Maintain. Instead of having a goal to lose weight, think of
not gaining it, says Anderson.

Be aware of your mind and body while you exercise. Cotton
says it helps not to read magazines or watch TV while
working out. “When you’re present, you’re better able to
make decisions about your habits … and your true needs,”
he says.
