Healthy and Fast Weight Loss Ephedra – Why the FDA Couldn’t Keep Their Ban On It

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Why was the FDA trying to hide the facts about Ephedra from YOU?

In April 2004 the FDA removed ephedra from the market claiming that it was responsible for dozens of deaths. The legal battle between the FDA and health officials began when the health officials became unhappy with the FDA’s decision to ban ephedra. The FDA had not taken proper action in declaring the ban on Ephedra based products. There reasoning for the ban was that there were too many problems occurring, some of which led to deaths. Ephedra was considered to be a drug that was too risky. The FDA claims that the negatives outweighed the positive aspects of the drug.

Although this didn’t seem to be the case until a baseball player had died sometime after taking an Ephedra based product to increase his performance. The FDA didn’t recognize that the baseball player had miss used the herb. Just like the others who had serious problems with the use of Ephedra; they were the same ones who abused the drug thinking they could increase the benefits by taking more at one time

On April 14 of 2005 a federal judge, Tena Campbell of the federal district court in Salt Lake City Utah reversed the ban on ephedra. This reversal forced the FDA revise their decision to ban products containing Ephedra.. The FDA lifted the ban recently because they where forced to realize Ephedra based products, if used properly, had astounding benefits, especially weight loss by naturally increasing energy and metabolism.

Ephedrine is found in many over-the-counter medications such as Sudafed, Contac, Primatene, and Bronkaid, but it has been used for over 5,000 years. It was used by the Chinese for many health issues including asthma and bronchitis. Ephedra is a powerful blood purifier, being a popular folk remedy for such conditions as arthritis, rheumatism, bursitis and other painful muscle and joint problems. Since Ephedra is a vasoconstrictor, it has also been used to stop internal bleeding.

There is only one company that is able to legally sell Ephedra based products. The rights to market an Ephedra based product that aids in weight loss where bought by the makers of Betafuel. The main goal of Betafuel is to help its users to lose weight quickly and easily. If you are interested in this product, and would like to find out more information concerning Betafuel, it can be found here at http://www.ephedracenter.com.

Weight Loss Secrets

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

The weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and everybody is trying to jump into the bandwagon and trying to convince you that they know what it takes to make you lose weight. Unfortunately, this information overload has given birth to a ton of misinformation. As such, it is best if you start your weight loss plan by distinguishing fact from fiction.

Weight Loss Facts and Fallacies

Skipping breakfast will make you lose weight (because you consume less food for the day). Actually, skipping breakfast achieves the opposite – you gain weight! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s basically what keeps you going for the rest of the day and a missed morning meal would make you feel hungry earlier than usual and then what? Either you’ll eat more than you should because you are extremely hungry or eat something that’s not healthy because it’s the most convenient thing your hands can grab at the moment.

Nibbles don’t count. A lot of weight challenged people tend to rationalize nibbling here and there would not make them gain weight. Unfortunately, it does. Just like how a couple of dimes can make a dollar, a bucketful of nibbles will be equivalent to one full meal.

Parties are exceptions. It does not matter if it’s a simple dinner at a small Chinese restaurant, a charity ball in a five-star hotel or a wedding reception – you are STILL not excused from counting calories and paying strict attention to the do’s and don’ts of your diet regime. Here’s food for thought – no matter where you eat, chocolate will always be high on sugar.

The only way to lose weight is to commit to a fitness club. If there’s a will, there’s a way! Exercise, literally, is movement. As such, going up and down the stairs, walking to and from work or simply cleaning your house or doing a little gardening all counts!

Popular diets don’t work. It is not that popular diets do not work it is just that they do not work for everyone. Our bodies are different from each other and react differently to different stimuli. For instance, the Atkins diet has helped thousands of people lose weight but has caused weight gain in others. So what do you do? The best and safest way to diet is to consult a nutritionist or dietician who can recommend the diet that is most suited for your body and current fitness goals.

Weight Loss = A Commitment to A New Way of Life

In your quest for weight loss, you will come across hundreds more of myths such as those listed above. However, in the middle of all of these there is one single truth that all diets and weight loss regimens concede to be true – to achieve weight loss and maintain it, you need to change your lifestyle.

To lose those unwanted pounds, you simply need to burn off more energy than you acquire from the foods you eat. Period. So seriously, the secret to weight loss is really something you have known all this time right? You need to change the way you look at food, make a conscious decision to start eating healthy and start exercising daily.

Brad Howard is one funny guy. If you are tired of wasting away and you’re a little concerned that the pounds aren’t coming off like they should be, maybe it’s time to try something a little different. Easy Weight Loss — 5 Steps to Lose Weight

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Is it easy to lose weight? Yes. Losing weight is easy. I see it everyday. Patients of mine come into the office as happy as can be because they lost 15 pounds on the newest easy weight loss plan.

It’s easy but can you keep it off?

My patients may feel great but none of them keep the weight off. Just as quickly as they lost weight, my patients following easy weight loss plans, gain it back…fast!

Gaining weight, specifically re-gaining weight lost while dieting, should be the focus of weight loss programs. Other things, like easy weight loss, are distracting and costly for all of us. Every year thousands of obese and overweight people do not lose weight because of easy weight loss distractions.

Why are fast and easy diet plans so attractive? Well, what could be better than losing weight and looking good fast? How about lasting healthy weight loss?

Why do you think diet plans focus solely on losing weight and say very little about keeping it off? Because it’s easy to lose weight and it’s next to impossible to prevent weight re-gain.

Diet plans take the easy road and provide dieters a quick short lived solution.

From Atkins to the Zone, weight loss diets have perfected colorful ways to disguise one simple easy weight loss principle. All diets can lead to easy weight loss by following this one easy principle.

Low carbohydrate diets, low fat diets, negative calorie diets, low energy density diets–all apply this one principle. And this one principle leads to easy weight loss. Do you know what it is?

To experience easy weight loss…eat fewer calories.

Holding other things constant, like exercise, simply eat fewer calories and you will lose weight easily. Whether or not you keep the weight off depends on how easily you lost it.

The Easy Weight Loss Steps

1. Week One — Cut calories by 100
2. Week Two — Cut additional 150 calories (total=250)
3. Week Three — Cut another 150 calories (total=400)
4. Week Four — Final cut 100 calories (total=500)

First month weight loss total = 2-4 pounds
500 calories cut = 1-2 pounds/week of weight loss
End of second month weight loss total = 6-12 pounds

The chance of keeping the weight off = 5%

To accelerate weight loss and weight re-gain, just cut more calories…fast. Or you can hold off on the weight loss plan above and learn more about weight re-gain and how to prevent it. Stay tuned for Weight Re-gain Prevention.

Until then, healthy living!

Fast Weight Loss — The Healthiest Fast Weight Loss Plan

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

In general, fast weight loss is not healthy. The faster you lose weight, the faster you’ll gain it back. Here are the top 5 reasons fast weight loss plans are not healthy…

  1. Diet fast and lose muscle not fat.
  2. Diet fast and lose water not fat.
  3. Diet fast and cause diet shock. What is diet shock?
  4. Diet fast and make no lifestyle changes.
  5. Diet fast and fail at long term weight loss.

Fast weight loss impacts your dieting efforts in so many negative ways, it’s hard to imagine how any fast dieting attempts could produce healthy results.

The only thing I can think of is to use a lower goal for your weight loss. At a 5% weight reduction, your health improves, diet shock is minimized, and it’s fast.

So, if planned properly, you can lose weight fast, in shorter time periods focusing on 5% reductions in total body weight.

At first, you will lose mostly muscle and water. But as you progress through each period, more and more fat will burn and less muscle. The way I see it, no matter how many fast weight loss warnings we write about, many of you will try the next one that hits the market. Instead of fighting, I want to work with you and provide you the healthiest yet fastest way to lose weight.

The Healthiest Fast Weight Loss Plan

Slow and consistent, a healthy weight loss plan delivers small successes everyday, building momentum along the way, peaking at the point in time when you reach you’re goal. This is key to dieting success.

Most dieters do the opposite…they experience fast weight loss early, their momentum peaks mid-way, and by the end of the diet, they are completely deflated. With no energy left to carry them into the next stage of weight loss — weight gain prevention — most dieters give up at this point.

My fast weight loss plan avoids the deflation and lack of motivation at the end of the diet because it evenly spreads the weight loss over 6 weeks. When do most dieters lose the most weight? Weeks 1-3. On my plan? Weeks 2-5.

No, these results are not from a good rigorous clinical study. Instead, they are my own observation of several patients I follow in Dallas.

Healthy Fast Weight Loss Steps

  1. Week One, Part One — drink a protein shake supplement everyday. Do not change anything else. Drink a protein shake that’s a 50:50 mix of whey to casein proteins. The best time to drink the shake depends on your physical activities.

Since most bodybuilders know what to do, I suggest for the rest of us, a protein shake between breakfast and lunch or between lunch and dinner. The time you choose depends on when you have the longest period of fasting. For me, it’s between lunch and dinner, so my shake comes around 3pm.

Week One, Part Two — Start an exercise program, with the first week involving nothing but stretching major muscle groups. Stretching increases the tonal stimulation to muscles (tone) causing them to burn more calories at rest. Plus it protects against injuries. The second week start some form of low impact aerobics…walking! Walk for 40 minutes everyday.

  2. Week Two — Start dieting by replacing 1/2 of a meal with the same protein shake from last week. Do this for 1 week.
  3. Week Three — Replace one whole meal with a protein shake. Change the mixture of the shake to 60% whey and 40% casein proteins. For most people, this comes out to about a 500 calorie reduction.
  4. Week Four — Reduce caloric intake by another 250 calories. I suggest adding a second protein shake, made up of the same 60:40 mix and use it to replace 1/2 of a another meal.

Record the amount of weight you’re losing. Never let it reach a rate of more than 4 pounds per week (that’s double what I normally recommend).

  5. Week Five — Repeat week four.
  6. Week Six — Add back the last 250 calories you dropped and stop drinking the second shake.

End Result — 12 to 18 pounds of average weight loss. The exact amount depends on many factors including exercise.

Fast Weight Loss Summary

Don’t do it. Fast weight loss inevitably will lead to future weight gain. Just don’t do it. But, if you do, at least follow my steps, the healthiest steps to fast weight loss.

Fast Weight Loss – Is It Possible

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Is fast weight loss possible? Probably not at the rate that everyone would wish. Fast weight loss means losing at most 1-2 pounds a week and maybe 3 pounds if morbidly obese. Note that I said, at most. Any program that promotes losing 10 pounds in 10 days is simply impossible to do in a healthful manner. Often times, these quick-fix plans rely on lost water weight which will be regained immediately once one’s normal diet resumes. Next time you watch a commercial for pills like Hydroxycut or TrimSpa, keep your eyes open for the fine print that reads something like, “Results not typical.” These companies use various ploys to trick the public into believing that the testimonials are the genuine words of actual customers and the before and after photos as being honest documentation of their transformations. Be smart and don’t fall victim to this pseudo-fitness garbage being advertised, it’s truly detrimental.

Myth: Targeting Fat Loss Using Exercises And Products

Another common tactic that those on the phonier side of the fitness industry also like to utilize is the perpetual flow of home fitness gadgets that with three easy payments will buy you a flatter stomach or whatnot. Since both men and women are insecure about their stomachs, those in this industry target them with various sit-up and crunch contraptions that advocate only minutes of exercise. One in particular promotes only 12 repetitions on one side and 12 more on the other to give the owner a nicely sculpted set of abs, all within 90 seconds. Impossible. You cannot work out in only 90 seconds and expect to achieve any noticeable results, especially when you are trying to isolate a single muscle group for the sake of fat loss. Furthermore, many fail to understand that ab work only leads to stronger abs, not subcutaneous fat loss, which is usually the goal of the buyer. So, don’t waste your money on a product that won’t give you the results it boasts to give you.

How To Lose Weight The Right Way:

The ideal path for weightloss includes a diet where your are reducing your usual daily caloric intake by 500 calories. With diet alone, one could lose a pound of fat a week just by removing a mere 500 excess calories. So instead of drinking 2 soft drinks a day and a cookie after lunch, have water instead and skip dessert. Now, couple this idea with smaller portions of lean protein and complex carbohydrates and more frequent meals so as to prevent hunger pangs. This will keep the metabolism high in order to maximize the body’s calorie burning potential. As for exercise, work out three times a week and keep workouts to every other day. Also, make sure you blend the right amount of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. Eat 5 meals a day, full of colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, seeds, and nuts and exercise 3 times a week and you’ll be guaranteed to lose weight as fast as the body possibly can, the right way!

5 Daily Steps to Effective Weight Loss

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

WHAT IS THE MEDIFAST PROGRAM?

Medifast is physician supervised program available with unlimited counseling and regular physical exams.

This program can work for anyone if you need to loose 10 to 100+ pounds! It is packed with vitamins, minerals and has a main ingredient of the ’super-health-food’ soy.

I feel that it is especially helpful for those that have developed a disorder with food or are obese.

PERMANENT WEIGHT LOSS?

You always hear that MEDIFAST will inevitably cause you to gain your weight back. This is true for ANY weight loss program. Let’s stick to reality here. If we do not remain steadfast and committed in taking care of our bodies then yes of course the weight will
come back. Only with exercise, education about nutrition and a love of life can we stay at a healthy weight. Medifast does work for those who decide to work with it.

A DAY IN THE LIFE..

Let me give you and example about a regular day on the program Meals should be 3-4 hours apart.

8:00am – I have awakened from sleep, revived and ready for a new day. I am ready for breakfast. Oatmeal sound great…especially Apple and Cinnamon. The oatmeal is best mixed with 3/4 cup of water
(if you like it thick use 1/2) and needs no sprucing up but I add a packet of Splenda and a little vanilla extract for that ‘gooey’ texture I like!

12:00 – I have a bowl of vegan chili with MediFast multigrain crackers (mixed with 1 cup water and heated for 2 minutes let set hot!!!) with bits of fresh onion and celery mixed in not to mention
a dash of garlic powder and paprika. The chili really does not need these extras but it is okay to add them if it is desired.

3:00 – I grab a delicious peanut butter protein bar gives me a boost and makes me feel like I’m cheating!

6:00 – I decide to have a small ‘meal’ for dinner (you can eat the MediFast products only or have 1 meal a day within guidelines). I have grilled turkey breast with a couple of cups of lettuce, a few
onions, fat-free honey Dijon dressing, and another packet of crackers.

9:00 – I have my last meal for the day. A favorite treat of mine. Canfield’s Chocolate Fudge soda mixed with a packet of Mocha Chocolate MediFast, a packet of Splenda, and a dash of chocolate extract (this was frozen made earlier in the day). It tastes so good…like chocolate ice milk! Yum.

THE RUN-DOWN

Basically to wrap things up in summary…
You can have 5 supplements a day and one meal. You
can also have two fast soups, that do not count as a supplement (beef, chicken, tomato) and up to 2 packets of crackers. The shakes (two different chocolates, vanilla, strawberry and orange),
oatmeal, chili, creamy soups and candy bars (peanut butter, chocolate devine, mint chocolate, berry, lemon and oatmeal) are counted as supplements. You can add small amounts of veggies,
extracts and spices to any of the soups (Chicken Noodle, Creamy Tomato, Chicken and Broccoli) and chili. You can also have any non-caloric drink as much as you want but need to get in at least 64 oz. of water a day. Coffee (milk can be used!) is allowed but limited to three cups a day . For dinners, 3-4 oz. of lean meats
(chicken, turkey, beef, pork, fish, shrimp) are allowed with or in lettuce greens (a couple of stuffed cups of lettuce allowed) with a few veggies in the salad and 2 tablespoons of low-fat or fat-free dressing. A cup or two of other cooked or raw veggies (green beans, broccoli, etc.) can substitute a salad.

Once you get into the swing of things, find out which foods you like best, and develop a schedule…things go pretty smoothly. The first three days of adjustment may have minor side-effects such as headaches, fatigue, and grumpiness but those first three days are worth any mild discomfort considering how helpful and how far you can go in healing the body and mind of obesity with this program.

By following similar steps like the above any person can effectivly lose weight with Medifast.

Eating for Fast Weight Loss 5 Proven Ways to Look and Feel Great Through Diet

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Are you interested in fast weight loss, more energy, and a better-looking body? No matter what anyone tries to tell you about losing weight quickly, remember this: what and how you eat is 80% of the solution. Forget the “fat-burning” pills, fitness gadgets, and extreme workouts — fast, healthy weight loss can only be achieved through “smart” eating.

With that in mind, here are 5 proven diet guidelines for dropping body fat, boosting your energy, and looking great fast:

1. Learn to limit or avoid processed carbs.

Almost anything not found in nature is going to hinder your weight loss progress. To change your body quickly, you really need to focus on eating only natural “good” carbs, such as: fresh or frozen vegetables, fresh fruits, sweet potatoes, lentils, dried beans, oatmeal, whole-grain rice, etc. (Note: Avoid breads and cereals as much as possible — even whole-grain versions — when trying to lose weight quickly.)

2. Never let yourself get hungry.

For most people, that means eating a large, healthy breakfast and then eating (or “snacking”) every 3 hours throughout the day. Self-discipline and willpower will only take you so far. If you never get hungry you won’t need to fight the urge to eat high-fat, high-sugar food as often.

3. Keep healthy food with you at all times.

Consider keeping a small cooler in your car filled with healthy meals and snacks. Good “fat loss friendly” snacks include things like: fresh veggies with low-calorie dip, fresh fruits, raw or roasted nuts and seeds, beef jerky, hard-boiled eggs, low-fat cheeses, olives, lean cold cut meats, etc.

4. Protein is vital.

If fast weight loss is your goal, make protein the “center” of your diet. Try to include some protein in most, if not all, of your meals and snacks. A high-protein diet speeds fat loss by boosting your metabolism and controlling blood sugar and insulin levels. Also, eating protein every few hours will help keep your energy levels stable and minimize hunger cravings. Good protein choices include: poultry, lean beef, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, cottage cheese, and whey protein powder.

5. “Healthy” salads can really help.

To lose weight as quickly as possible, try to eat at least 1 or 2 “healthy” salads per day. A “healthy” salad is one that contains only fresh lettuce, vegetables, fruits, and good fats. Adding meats and cheeses is ok as long as they’re of the low-fat variety. Stay away from high-fat and/or high-sugar salad dressings, as well as fatty cheeses and fried or high-fat meats. The best salad dressing for fast weight loss is probably virgin olive oil mixed with apple cider vinegar. Both of these substances are ultra-healthy and may help to boost body fat loss.

Weight Loss Online — The Fastest & Easiest Weight Loss Plan

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

My first article provided steps for fast healthy weight loss. This was followed by my easy weight loss plan. So, if you combine the two, you’ll have my Fastest Easiest Weight Loss Plan — that you should never do!

Weight Loss Online — Avoid Fast Plans

Fast weight loss plans cause diet shock. If you’re not familiar with diet shock, read the article found at this link, Weight Loss Online–Diet Shock.

The faster you lose weight the greater the subsequent drop in your resting metabolic rate. Your body thinks it’s starving and in order to conserve energy it will slowdown the metabolic rate. This translates into fewer calories burned on a daily basis, which in turn, creates a positive energy balance.

A positive energy balance is simply extra calories left over at the end of the day that you store as fat, yippee! Unless, of course, you eat less and/or exercise more to compensate for the extra calories brought to you by your own body’s slower metabolism.

So, as you can see, you really shouldn’t like fast weight loss plans…unless it comes from me. My plan allows you to lose weight at the fastest possible rate while minimizing your body’s efforts to slow your metabolism.

Weight Loss Online — Avoid Easy Plans

What’s wrong with easy weight loss plans? Nothing. If a weight loss diet actually makes the weight loss process easier without setting the stage for weight re-gain (the inevitable weight gain after dieting) than by all means go for it.

Unfortunately and especially true for weight loss online, easy plans mean bad plans and lots of weight re-gain in the future. How? Easy usually means fast (see above on fast weight loss plans) and fast is usually achieved by severely restricting calories. Since you are basically starving, your metabolism slows and the weight re-gain chain reaction is on.

My easy weight loss plan will not slow your metabolism because I think it’s wrong to starve. My plan is exactly what it’s supposed to be…easy. It still works, but the work is easier to do.

Here is the plan for Fast & Easy Weight Loss Online…

Week One — Cut calories by 100, do nothing else.

Week Two — Cut additional 250 calories (total=350) and add a protein shake with mostly whey protein. For most people, replacing a meal with the protein shake will give a net reduction of about 300-350 calories.

Week Three — Cut another 250 calories (total=600) and drink two shakes of mostly whey protein. The best time to drink them is in the morning and in the middle of your longest period of not eating. For me, I don’t eat from 3 pm until 8 or 9 at night. So I will drink a shake in the morning and one around 5 pm.

Week Four — Repeat week three.

Week Five — Repeat week two by adding back 250 calories and drinking one shake.

Week Six — Repeat week one by adding back 250 calories.
Repeat the entire cycle until you reach your ideal weight.

If you follow the steps outlined above, you will lose weight at the highest rate allowed for healthy weight loss (4 pounds per week). Plus it’s a breeze to follow.

We’ll that’s it for my fast and east weight loss plan. Now, once you start this plan, make sure you prepare for your real problem…weight re-gain.

Fast Weight Loss Takes Time

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

I recently received the following email:

Q. Five weeks ago, I began an exercise program and so far I have not lost any weight or gained in muscle tone, which is my goal. Regardless, I intend to keep it up, knowing that the results I want will occur if I give it time.

A. Yes, your results will occur if given enough time. Just stay the course. Be consistent and you’ll get there. Luckily she was not upset about the lack of progress on her bathroom scale but most people aren’t so willing to take that time.

Typical Dieter Losing Weight with Exercise: Ms. Too Tight Pants Decides to Drop a Dress Size

1. She starts out feeling excited, knowing she’ll lose the weight she wants in the long run, if she can stay with it. (She’s read the books. She knows this eating better and exercising more works).

2. She starts feeling better right away, although the scale shows no difference. (Results take awhile to build, and she knows this but it gets harder and harder to wait.)

3. Her clothes begin to fit looser. People start to notice, asking “Hey you’re looking good. What are you doing?” (Things are starting to happen, but not very quickly).

4. She does “all the right things,” such as eating well and getting good rest. She’s tracking what she’s eating and keeping a journal. It’s all going great. (Consistency is the secret and a very good discipline).

5. Since she’s been “so good” she decides to step on the scale. She’s even got rewards in mind depending on how much she’s lost. (Where’s the evidence? She’s getting impatient and wants to know this is working).

6. Alas! The scale shows a three pound weight gain and she throws her hands up in despair saying, “This doesn’t work! I quit!” (The scale doesn’t show us what is going on inside, it only weighs the total package. Maybe she just finished drinking 16 ounces of water, that’s a pound right there).

7. She dismisses the real evidence (how she feel better and looks better; how she’s been getting compliments; how her clothes fit better and some are getting too lose to wear) and she decides instead to rely of the wisdom of the bathroom scale. That piece of metal sitting on the bathroom floor, known for wildly inaccurate results, but nevertheless trusted as the ultimate authority.

She may have even started to gain some valuable active muscle tissue that supports and sustains the body, creates beautiful curves, and burns calories in the process, but without the result she wanted to see on her scale, she’s quit.

Your body is made up of fat, skin, bone and muscle (plus water). When you exercise the goal is to increase the muscle and decrease the fat. A pound of muscle takes up much less space than a pound of fat, so regardless of what number you see on the bathroom scale, if you have been exercising, you are building a better, healthier frame.

Give your body a chance to display the results you seek. Rely on the evidence you see in how your clothes fit for instance. If you’re losing inches, but the scale hasn’t shown a change just wait. The scale will catch up soon enough. If you’ve gotten on the path to better health and weight loss, stay the course. Fast weight loss takes time.

Weight Loss Pills Are They Safe

Friday, February 6th, 2009

In terms of diet pills, before asking about their effectiveness, it’s better to ask: are they safe? Let’s face it – a diet pill manufacturer is going to brag about how many pounds you’ll lose by taking their product, not how many side effects you’ll have. As a result, most customers are not given enough information about the safety of diet products and unfortunately might put their health at risk.

Phenylpropanolamine and caffeine

Most over-the-counter diet pills contain a combination of medications that have various benefits and harms. Usually they include phenylpropanolamine and caffeine, which suppress appetite. Phenlpropanolamine stimulates the central nervous system and has many effects on the body, in that it controls appetite. This is why it’s a key ingredient in most diet pills. Caffeine acts in a similar way and also causes a person to be alert and awake.

There is proof that diet pills can effectively reduce a person’s weight, but many health experts question the relevance of this. Recently, there have been findings that show phenylpropanolamine to cause serious side effects such as high blood pressure, nausea, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, irritability and even hallucinations. Similarly, caffeine can affect a person’s blood circulation and its effects on blood pressure are unpredictable. Obese individuals are especially in danger of hypertension – which is ironic, as the heavier a person is, the more likely he or she will be to take a diet pill.

Laxatives and Diuretics

Some diet pills on the market contain laxatives and diuretics. These merely force a person’s body to eliminate vital body fluids. Specifically, a laxative stimulates a dieter’s large bowel to empty, but only after food and calories have been absorbed via the small intestines. So fluids are lost in the process and thus the body reacts by retaining water and consequentially, bloating occurs. This simply causes a person to feel they need to lose more weight. Basically, laxatives not only don’t work, but are counterproductive.

Prolonged use of laxatives also cause cramps, bloating, bulimia, anorexia, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, gas, nausea, vomiting, electrolyte disturbances, and chronic constipation and when laxative use finally ceases, a person can experience withdrawal symptoms. Laxatives should only be used to correct irregular bowel movement; otherwise they simply cause problems.

Likewise, diuretics are a very dangerous component of diet pills, since they cause heart arrhythmias and dizziness. They also lead to dehydration and ultimately, kidney and organ damage due to the subsequent imbalance of electrolytes within the body. In order to protect itself from further loss of water, the body will again, retain more water and cause an individual to feel even fatter than before.

Conclusion

So far, no pills or artificial diet supplements can adequately replace regular exercise and a nutritious diet. If you want to lose weight, your aim should be for a healthy body, not a damaged one. Don’t fall prey to misleading diet commercials and bear in mind that there is no such thing as a “quick fix” to weight loss.
