Rapid Weight Loss Tips, Techniques and Strategies

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

It seems everyone is looking for that magic bullet – rapid weight loss secret that will instantly shed excess weight and turn you into a supermodel.

The fact is, there are healthy, effective and simple techniques you can use to achieve weight loss – and keep it off over the long term.

Tip 1: Rapid weight loss requires a multi-faceted approach that combines diet, excercise, emotional support and in some cases, diet supplements.

Start by learning about and mapping out a low-carb diet you can live with. You can use the resources below to get more information on finding a low-carb diet you can live with. Develop an exercise program that results in at least 15 minutes of activity each day – walking, running, swimming are all good.

Tip 2: Set realistic goals. Rapid weight loss depends on your ability to focus on a disciplined mix of diet and exercise. By setting realistic goals, you will not become discouraged and lose your focus.

Tip 3: Listen to your body. Though there are many rapid weight loss plans out there, everyone’s body and metabolism reacts differently to these programs. Some people can’t progress on the diet as fast as others. So, substitute a more rigorous exercise program to compensate. Others are not able to exercise as rigorously – learn to listen to your body and adjust your diet plan accordingly.

Tip 4: Drink lots of water. Drink at least 6 – 8oz glasses of water each day. Weight loss depends on flusing your system out, and you must stay hydrated during that process.

Above all else, be consistent. Moderate dieting, exercise and supplementation applied in a consistent way, day after day will result in better weight loss than massive action followed by a return to old habits.

As you can see, a moderate diet plan and moderate exercise program combined with solid emotional support is the key to succeeding with rapid weight loss.

Weight Loss Tips, Tricks, and Tactics – Part 1

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

I personal lost 60 pounds in 2003. Here are some tactics I used to lose the weight.

Eat every three hours. This will keep your blood sugar stable. Try to eat real food at least three times a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. In between your food meals take a good meal replacement shake or bar.

Never eat a carbohydrate by itself. This is basically all sugar. When you eat a carbohydrate by itself there is a sudden increase in sugar in the body. This causes the body to release insulin. However, the body releases too much insulin because it thinks more sugar is coming. The insulin basically grabs the sugar/carbohydrate and stores it to fat for use at some other time. Since your body released too much insulin there is not enough sugar to support the brain function. That is why you feel tired or sluggish. So you’re fatter and dumber.

Watch the gums and mints. Many of these little gums and mints contain calories, sugars, and everything else that is not good for you. Read the labels, if it has sugar in it do not eat it.

Eat foods that have 30% or less, calories from fat. Everyone is on this big no carbohydrate craze. However, did you know that 1 gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories, 1 gram of protein contains 4 calories, and 1 gram of fat contains 9 calories? There are over twice as many calories in a single gram of fat, than in a protein or carbohydrate.

To find out how many calories are from fat check the label. The label will list the total calories and then list how many calories are from fat. If there are 100 total calories, and there are 70 calories from fat, that’s 70%, too high.

Give yourself one reward day to eat and drink whatever you want. You worked hard all week, reward yourself.

Alcohol is a converted to a sugar. Save it for your free day. If you do drink, it might also be helpful to take hydroxycitric acid capsules about 30 minutes before drinking. Hydroycitric acid is from the herb Garcinia Cambogia. This interferes with the enzyme that converts excess sugars into triglycerides, lessening the likelihood the alcohol will be stored as fat.

10 Easy Weight Loss Tips

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

1. Stop Drinking Soft Drinks

Each soft drink is 150 empty calories. Replacing just one soft drink per day with water will result in losing 16 lbs per year.

2. Keep Yourself Busy

When there is nothing to do, we reach for the food out of boredom. Staying busy with other activities will help to keep your mind off food.

3. Get Rid Of Tempting Foods

We all have foods that we can’t resist. Knowing that, it’s best to not have those foods around the house. Out of sight, out of mind.

4. Watch Your Portions

How much you eat is just as important as what you eat. If an average person starts eating just 10% less, he will lose about 20 lbs per year without changing his diet.

5. Think Of Calories In Terms Of Exercise

You have to do the whole hour of aerobics to burn off the 500 calories contained in a big piece of cheesecake. What is easier for you: exercising for 1 hour or not eating the cheesecake?

6. Take A Pause

Next time when you are about to eat something you shouldn’t, pause for a couple of seconds and ask yourself -”Is It Worth It?” If the answer is “Yes”, go ahead and indulge. If the answer is “No”, step back and congratulate yourself for taking that pause.

7. Eat Slowly

It takes our brain about 20 minutes to realize that we are full. When you eat too fast, there is not enough time for the “full” feeling to register, so you’d end up literally stuffing yourself with food.

8. Don’t Skip Meals

When you skip a meal, you get way too hungry. When you are too hungry, you won’t be able to control yourself at the next meal. As a result, you’ll end up eating more than 2 meals worth of calories.

9. Plan Your Meals

Try to plan your meals in advance. Not knowing what you are going to eat will send you right to the fast food joint.

10. Do Everyday Physical Activities

Take the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Park your car at the far end of the parking lot. All those activities add up. Walking briskly for 15 minutes per day will help you lose an extra 10 lbs per year.

Quick Weight Loss!

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Perhaps you’ve heard the joke about the SHOCKING news headlines from the year 2050: “New study reveals that exercise and proper nutrition is the key to successful weight loss!”

It seems that we’re always looking for a quick and easy way to lose fat, but those darn studies and that reputable research just keeps getting in the way of our dream!

There’s always someone out there telling us we can lose fat without watching our diet and without any exercise. As much as we’d like to believe that’s true, deep down inside we know better. The ads promising that we can ‘get slim quick’ remind us of the ‘get rich quick’ infomercials we see on late-night television. Still, there’s no shortage of ‘get slim quick’ products out there…..

A YaHoo search of the term “Easy Weight Loss” yielded about 10,600,000 hits.

A Google search of the phrase “Quick Weight Loss” showed about 14,300,000 recommended sites to visit!

Looking up “Easy Fat Loss” on YaHoo revealed about 4,290,000 answers.

Finally, running a Google search for “I want to lose weight but I don’t want to exercise because I don’t have the time, money or will power” will bring up about 633,000 sites…..we’re not kidding!

Compare that to the Google results for “Weight Loss Truth”: only about 2,760,000.

+ PERMANENT FAT LOSS REQUIRES EFFORT

Let’s face it, there really is no good way to lose fat without any effort! Successful and permanent weight (fat) loss takes some time, it takes some effort, and it certainly requires some exercise! Consider what Dr. Gabe Mirkin had to say on the subject recently: “There are many products on the market today that promise to help you lose weight. None will help you unless they get you to exercise more and eat fewer calories.” (Source: The Sportsmedicine Institute, Inc.)

+ DON’T BE TEMPTED BY SHORTCUTS

So is it possible to lose weight quickly? Sure, but weight loss achieved quickly and/or by ‘cheating’ will never be permanent and is usually not healthy.

Remember the phen-fen pills that were popular just a few years ago? While they certainly helped you lose weight, they were withdrawn from the market in September of 1997 after being linked to the occurrence of serious cardiac valvular disease, and primary pulmonary hypertension.

Ephedra, another weight loss pill, was pulled from shelves on April 12, 2004. After a careful review of the available evidence about the risks and benefits of ephedra in supplements, the FDA found that these supplements present an unreasonable risk of illness or injury to consumers. The data showed little evidence of ephedra’s effectiveness, except for short-term weight loss, while confirming that the substance raises blood pressure and stresses the heart (Source: www.nccam.nih.gov).

Please note that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that ephedra was effective for ONLY short-term weight loss. Does that sound like a permanent solution?

There are lots of other ’shortcuts’ out there, from laxatives to harsh stimulants. There are also some honestly good products that can help us lose fat IF they are used in conjunction with regular exercise and healthy nutrition. Green tea is a good example. Clinical studies conducted by Dr. Abdul Dulloo, of the University of Geneva in Switzerland brought the conclusion that green tea weight raises metabolic rates and speeds up fat oxidation.

+ THE TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

So what’s the take-home message? The bottom line is that there is no ‘get slim quick’ miracle out there. The only way to achieve permanent fat loss by following the same advice we’ve been hearing for years: exercise regularly and watch what we eat!

Let’s watch out for products that claim we can achieve the body we’ve always wanted without diet or exercise. We know that’s not true, so let’s not be tempted by the empty promise.

Easy Weight Loss for Dog Lovers

Friday, March 27th, 2009

If you need to lose weight, more than likely you are thinking in terms of diet and exercise plans, not pets. There are, however, several reasons why getting a dog may be the best thing you ever do, in terms of weight loss. Having a dog can lead to several small but significant lifestyle changes that all add up, over time!

For one thing, a dog requires a minimum of one hour a day of walking – and that’s every day, not just sunny days, and not just when you feel like it. Of course, you can just take the dog into the yard and throw the ball for it, but why not take advantage of your canine companion and go for real walks every day? It’s better for you, and better for the dog. Over time, it gets to be very enjoyable.

Some people feel that just the act of getting a new puppy is weight loss measure in and of itself. Until it’s trained, it’s more than likely to keep you on your toes – you’ll be lucky to get a chance to sit down and eat, let alone cook! That initial crazy period usually ends pretty quickly, though. Besides walking, here are some other tips for easy weight loss with dogs.

Here’s a great trick – feed any bits of food you don’t want or think you shouldn’t eat to the dog. For example, I haven’t eaten a toast crust in over two years. I used to eat them just to be rid of them. It just seems wrong to throw them in the garbage, somehow. But feeding them to the dog is nothing more or less than symbiotic. You may not think this is a great weight loss measure, by the way, but I’m sure that all those crusts add up!

I must admit (and veterinary dog food purists, close your ears!) that it goes a bit further than that. What if you have made a yummy pasta dish, and there’s just a little left, not really enough to be worth putting in a plastic container and saving? If it’s not so good, I’d throw it out, but if it is good, that puts me in a spot. I’ll probably either eat it outright despite being full, or pick away at it over the course of a few hours until it’s gone. This can be avoided if you just simply and automatically give it to the dog. After all, dogs evolved alongside humans for millennia in exactly this way. They ate the leftovers of whatever their human companions were eating. Nowadays, the pet food industry cautions us against doing so, but if the food you’re eating is reasonably healthy, who’s to say that feeding small bits of it to the dog will do the dog any harm at all?

Personally, I have, on occasion, sunk even lower than that in canine gastrointestinal abuse. There is a brand of white cheddar popcorn, marketed as ‘Smartfood’ and sold in huge bags, with about a day and a half worth of calories in each. I love it. I love it so much I have been known to eat a whole bag over the course of a few hours. It’s delicious. It’s the kind of thing I should never buy a bag of. But if I do, and I’ve ripped into it, and it’s disappearing, I can do damage control by periodically pausing in my binging to tip large amounts of the popcorn into a bowl on the floor, where it is just as quickly eaten up by the dog.

It helps to have a big dog. I don’t know that any of these measures would work so well with a little one that can’t eat quickly. It helps, also, if the dog is at least half black lab. They are purported to have iron cast stomachs, rather like goats, and this has proven to be true in the case of my dog – as proven when, at the age of eleven months, she ate four tubes of oil paint, metal and all. She ate all the reds, yellows and oranges, strangely enough ignoring the cool side of the color wheel completely – and, amazingly, suffered no ill consequences at all!

Personalize Your Weight Loss Plan

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

The problem with many diet and weight loss plans is that they take a one-size-fits-all approach that simply might not work for everyone. That’s why the same diet that you friend might swear by may not work nearly as well for you. Actually, looking at it logically, this is hardly surprising – everyone’s metabolism and, even more importantly, everyone’s habits are different. That’s why it makes sense to have a diet and weight loss plan designed specifically for you.

This is an idea that’s rapidly catching on. Companies such as L.A. Weight Loss and several others are taking on the challenge of designing personal weight loss plans for each of their clients. After all, everyone’s reasons for being overweight are different. For the most part, being overweight is based on bad habits. Some of us have the habit of eating late at night, while others are addicted to sweets or to fried food. You can try and eliminate the behavior, or course – but most often, that’s easier said than done.

A better approach might be to work around the behavior that is impeding your weight loss. For example, if you are one of those people who just can’t go without dessert, you will do better if your weight loss plan includes a daily dose of sweets. There are many low fat, fruit based desserts that you can have without ruining your diet, or if you really crave a decadent dessert, you can cut calories elsewhere or up your exercise to make up for it. You are less likely to cheat and more likely to be successful with your diet if these habits can be integrated in your diet plan – and most of the time, they can.

Here’s another example: we’ve all heard about how successful the low-carb approach to eating can be for some people. By upping their intake of protein and eliminating all processed carbohydrates such as bread and pasta, many people have had spectacular results. However, if bread and pasta happen to be your favorite foods of all – if you were raised with them and can’t picture living without them – you have little chance of being successful on a low carb diet such as the Zone or Atkins. You would do better, most likely, if you can eat small amounts of the foods you love every day.

Finally, there are some people who are overweight because they ‘graze’ all day long rather than sitting down to regular meals at regular times. This can be one of the most destructive eating habits of all, because it makes it very difficult to measure or keep track of how much food you are actually consuming. If those are your habits, your chances of being successful on any diet plan that restricts you to just three meals a day are quite low. You’ll constantly be wanting to snack, and you need a diet plan that allows you to do that. In fact, some dieticians feel that it’s better to eat many smaller meals a day rather than a few large ones. If you have an organized approach to your snacking, there’s no reason why you can’t maintain these habits but change the types or amounts of food you eat for maximum weight loss.

In short, the personalized approach to dieting and weight loss makes sense because everyone is different, and everyone has different obstacles to overcome. When you buy a diet book, though, chances are that you will learn about a one-size-fits-all type of dieting. If you go to one of the many centers that offers personalized diet plans, however, they will be able to design a plan for you that works with your eating style and habits, rather than against it. Combined with personalized counseling and regular weigh-ins, this approach to dieting has been very successful for many people. It’s easier to minimize the harmful elements in our habits than it is to do away with the habits themselves.

That having been said, it’s also important to have an organized, well laid out plan that you can follow. Many weight problems occur precisely because people don’t tend to have an organized approach to eating. When your plan is easy to follow and you have access to great advice in a supportive environment, chances are that you will be able to take off that weight!

For Effective Weight Loss – Curb Hunger And Avoid The Binge

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Curb Hunger and Avoid The Costly Binge

Everyone’s been there – you miss a meal or you
are getting used to a lower calorie phase of
your nutrition plan when the munchies hit. You
grab the nearest and quickest food available –
usually a high carb snack food – and you chow down.
And to add insult to injury you find yourself
hungry again just as quickly as someone who
didn’t snack!

The best thing you can do to avoid this is to
plan ahead and always have a meal ready to go
quickly. Sure, this can’t always be done but it’s
your best bet to avoiding binges.

When hunger pangs hit – DO SOMETHING! And I
don’t mean eat. Drink water, go for a walk, etc.
You’ll find that the hunger pangs subside in about
10 minutes or so – unless you’ve missed a meal and
are really hungry.

If you must snack, make sure to always have high
protein food available. You’ll stay fuller longer
as it takes your body more time to digest protein.

Try to keep some of these things handy -

Cooked kitchen strips – one cup has 38 grams of
protein and only 180 calories

Lowfat cottage cheese – one cup has 28 grams of
protein and 168 calories

A three ounce can of white-meat chicken has 14
grams of protein and 70 calories

Two sticks of string cheese has 14 grams of
protein and 160 calories

A full can of tuna packed in spring water – 37
grams of protein and 175 calories

Reach for the nuts. Keeping nuts around will
keep you from binging on high carbohydrate junk food
because they are just as convenient for when you
have to eat something now!

Nuts supply you with good fats that can lower your
cholesterol as well as fiber and important vitamins
and minerals. Make sure to select dry roasted
and unsalted. And don’t forget, even though it’s
high in good fats, that still translates to 9
calories per gram. Don’t every eat.

Weight Loss Tips, Tricks, And Tactics – Part 2

Friday, February 13th, 2009

I personal lost 60 pounds in 2003. Here are some tactics I used to lose the weight.

Get out and do some type of short cardiovascular exercise before breakfast. Even if it is only a ten minute walk. If you want to lose weight this is the best time to exercise. Your body has been working all night without any “new” fuel to help it out. By exercising before breakfast your body will be more likely to go after the fat for energy.

During your morning exercise, imagine yourself with the body you are trying to achieve and come up with a saying that helps motivate you. When I would run in the morning I would say, “every day and every way I am getting leaner, fitter, healthier.” I would repeat it over and over.

Eat meats that are 85% lean.

Do not “count” your dailies activities as “exercise”. If you are active at work or playing golf everyday, that’s great. However, your body is use to that. Walking the dog is walking the dog, that is not exercise unless you are running or walking very fast.

Avoid white flour and bleach grains. Try whole-wheat noodles in your spaghetti. It freaked my kids out at first, but now they love it.

Take an antioxidant supplement every day. Most people are just not getting what they need through food.

How To Maintain Your Weight Loss Motivation

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

One of the hardest aspects of getting yourself into shape, is maintaining the motivation you need to achieve your weight loss goals. Just about anyone will lose some of their enthusiasm, a month or so into a weight loss program. I have learned a few things that keep me motivated and dedicated to achieving my goals. They have helped me tremendously and I think they will help you as well.

Here a just a few of the many things I do to motivate myself.

Weigh yourself once a week:

I weigh myself at least a few times a week. In the beginning of your program once is plenty because you don’t want to discourage yourself. The reason I weigh myself once a week is because it can be easy to look in the mirror and justify, in your head, that you aren’t gaining any weight. If you look at a scale every week, you know for sure whether you need to make changes or not.

Keep a picture of the heavier version of yourself in plain sight:

I have a picture of me at my son’s baptism next to my bed. I was 20-25 pounds heavier in that picture than I currently am. This gives me a chance everyday to see what I don’t want to slip back into. It reminds me why I lost weight and keeps me from sliding back into old habits. Also, it will just remind you of how far you have come and how much better you look now.

Visualize everyday:

You should visualize everyday, how you want yourself to look. If you have achieved your goals then just imagine yourself doing some new things, in your new body. This really does help. I try to visualize myself everyday doing something that I plan on doing in the future. This can help with goals in any aspect of your life. I used to do this while running, when I first started my program. I would picture myself mentally, running and looking the way I wanted to look.

Set your sights farther and higher:

If you have already reached your ideal weight, then you should set some new goals or standards. If you don’t, you will probably fall back into old habits. It is harder to maintain something, then to achieve something new. So if you have reached your ideal weight, then why not set a goal to add some muscle. Or maybe, set a goal to get absolutely ripped. In perfect shape, like you never imagined you could. Look high and far, set your goal and then reach it. Nothing will keep you more motivated then setting and achieving new goals.

Those are just a few of the ways that I use to keep myself motivated. There are thousands more. To find other motivating ideas just do some searching on the internet. You can find thousands of articles and websites dedicated to weight loss and health.

Being healthy and losing weight can change every area of your life. It is amazing, the possibilities we begin to see, after reaching an achievement such as weight loss. Don’t lose the momentum. Keep it turned up and start using it to help you with other areas of your life. But most of all, never give up. There will always be obstacles in any thing you do in life. Just don’t use them as excuses to hold you back from achieving the ultimate freedom you deserve.

The Fail-Safe Weight Loss Formula

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Yes Virginia, the fail-safe weight loss formula exists.

It’s so simple, we overlook it. Instead, we focus on the latest fad diet or the newest exercise video.

The fail-safe weight loss formula appears in an audio program authored by the self-help guru Brian Tracey. Here’s his version of this formula . . .
Eat LESS, Exercise MORE.

Guaranteed Every Time

Disappointed? After all, we are very familiar with this message. But, if we pay attention to our daily habits, this formula will work EVERY TIME. Guaranteed.

How can this formula succeed 100% of the time? It’s simple math. And math always works. ALWAYS.

Okay, so you have a trust issue when it comes to weight loss. Let’s PROVE that it works.

It’s a Numbers Game

Suppose you’ve been gaining about 10 pounds a year for the past 3 years. If your daily caloric requirement is 2000, you have been on average 100 calories over your requirement every day for the past 3 years.

If your goal is to simply reverse the 30-pound weight gain, you need to reduce your daily caloric intake by 200 calories.

Do ONE of the following:

1. Eat 200 calories LESS a day.

2. Burn 200 calories MORE a day.

3. Combine eating less and increasing your activity level for a total of 200 calories, for example, eat 100 less and burn 100 more.

Gradually Lose Those Extra Pounds

You could lose the 30 pounds by changing a few habits. First, eat half the usual muffin a day. Then, climb the stairs in your apartment building every day instead of pushing elevator buttons.

The next month, you could lose the entire muffin and park your car a little further away from the building where you work as well as climbing the stairs.

Over time, you will lose the weight. You have to. It’s in the numbers. And you haven’t starved yourself or gotten into the dreaded “I have to go to the health club” routine.

5 Steps to Weight Loss

If your eyes glaze over when you read numbers, here’s the easy part: all the information you need is online at www.caloriecontrol.org

The steps are as follows:

1. Decide how many pounds you want to lose. EXAMPLE: 20 pounds

2. Decide how long in days you want it to take. Be realistic about the length of time. EXAMPLE: 365 days

3. Multiply the pounds identified in number 1 by 3500.
EXAMPLE: 20 pounds X 3500 = 70,000 calories

4. Divide the result in step 3 by the number of days to get the number of daily calories. EXAMPLE: 70,000 calories divided by 365 days = 192 calories per day.

5. Decide if you will eat less, increase your activity level, or both to get to the number in step 4. Use the web site calorie and exercise calculator (www.caloriecontrol.org) to figure out how you can eat less and exercise more.

So, are you going to be fat forever? Or will you use the fail-safe formula: Eat LESS, Exercise MORE.

ALWAYS REMEMBER (and NEVER forget) – Take it one day at a time.
